When I was younger I was in a speech contest. I managed to win my way to the National Competition in St. Louis, MO after winning local & state competitions. My mom helped me with the speech about black history. And as with any speech, you always want a great ending. My compelling proclamation at the end was “If not you, who? If not now, when?” I wanted to compel the listeners to personal action.
This morning that very phrase came to mind when I thought of you. I thought of how you sometimes question yourself and put off the success you desire. I thought of how you somehow believe you have time on your side though it keeps on ticking into the future. I thought how you so quickly consider the interest of others ahead of your own. I thought about you a lot.
Believe me, I only know your thoughts bc they have often been my own. They were the very same thoughts I’d use to hold myself back, shrinking to stay comfortable. And even more, they were the same thoughts I had to cast aside so the greatness in me could emerge fully.
So today, I want you to know I get it. I’ve been there. I had to discover the courage to believe in me and put myself first.
Hey Sis, greatness is in you, too. Yes, it’s your time to soar.
So today, I admonish you they same way I did those listeners long ago...
If not you, who? If not now, when?
